Getting ready for your maternity photo session should be fun! After all, you’re preparing for your little one’s first professional shoot!

Plan on scheduling your session between 31 and 36 weeks to ensure your beautiful shape has completely taken form.  You’ll be a pregnancy pro by then and dodge any discomfort that comes with the earlier weeks.

Another great way to elevate your session is to include Dad, big brother or big sister. While many of the shots will be just of you and baby-to-be. It’s always fun to change it up and capture everyone’s excitement about this very special time ….. and very special new arrival!

These beautiful images will be permanent memories of a time when you were just “we” or “the three of us.” Capturing the anticipation of your family will be a memory maker for sure! Here are a few tips for getting the best results.

For your maternityphotoshoot, you will want to look as fabulous on the outside as you are feeling on the inside. Make plans to get your hair done and maybe go for a manicure and/or pedicure. You deserve it and it will give your self-confidence a boost that is sure to shine through in the photos.

  1. What to wear on the Day of the Session
  2. Avoid dark colors – Ok, there are no hard and fast rules about what to wear. But if you want your bump to really shine, don’t cover it with black or other very dark fabrics. These will hide rather than accentuate it.
  3. Coordinate with your partner – If husband or partner is involved in the pics, coordinate to ensure cohesive styling. Keep their wardrobe toned down so it compliments – not competes with – yours.

Keep Stress away before your Photo Shoot

It is natural for some expectant moms to feel tense before their maternity photo shoot. You may feel apprehension about being in front of the camera or just be overwhelmed as your due date draws near. Release some of that tension by getting more rest in the days leading up to the photo session, if possible.

Get plenty of Rest the Night before

I know, it can be hard to get any decent sleep during pregnancy, but if you’re able to, go to bed early and try to get a full night’s sleep. That way, you’ll be refreshed and relaxed at your session the next day.

Stay hydrated—and don’t skip Breakfast

It’s critical to drink plenty of water both before and during your session. Hydrated skin will look fresh, and staying hydrated will help keep your energy up throughout the shoot. And even if you are nervous about stepping in front of the camera, be sure to eat breakfast before your session.

Prepare on the Day of your Session

Before your session, make sure to have a light snack and drink plenty of water. Pack a bag of extra snacks and any other items you think you may need throughout your maternity shoot.

Put on some non-greasy Lotion

A couple hours before your session, take time to apply some non-greasy lotion to reduce any dry spots on your skin. Always aim for matte regaarrding your Make-up. Be sure to avoid using any artificial tanners or spray tans as they may give your skin an unnatural orange look.

Bring along sentimental Items

Anything special you want to include in your photos is a great addition. Whether that’s a family heirloom, your ultrasound, new baby shoes or even your own baby blanket or favorite childhood toy, these mementos can add special meaning and a personal touch to your images.

  1. Practice your poses
  2. Rather than rely on the photographer to direct you, try practising your poses in front of the mirror first. That way you can work out how to stand or sit in a way that’s most flattering to your body.
  3.  Try:
    • -Turning your hips three-quarters from the camera
    • -Lifting your chin up slightly
    •   Keeping your arms away from (rather than pressed against) your torso

Don’t stress

It’s easier said than done, but do your best to relax and not worry about your session.

Your photographer will walk you through every pose and position.

Be yourself – At the end of the day,  you want photos you love, and you want them to represent YOU, as you are, right now. So be yourself; choose styling you feel comfortable with, and speak up if you don’t like the way the shoot is going.
